Why Is Ihram Important?

why is ihram important

No one performs Hajj and Umrah without Ihram, which is the main reason “why is Ihram important“. Ihram is a symbol of peace, harmony, and unity. Millions of Muslims come for Hajj wearing the same clothes, none of which is better than the other. It creates humility and harmony among the believers who are in the Kaaba with the sole purpose of worshipping Allah.

Before delving deeper into this fascinating topic, you should know that both Hajj and Umrah are sacred journeys that end at the Kaaba. And wearing this dress is the Sunnah of our Prophet Muhammad. When Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions travelled from Medina to Makkah for Hajj, the Meccans prevented them from entering Makkah. At that time you and your companions were wearing Ihram. In ancient times, Muslims did not need any permission to perform Umrah. But now there is a need.

What is Ihram?

Ihram means to enter into a state of purity and sanctity or to declare something forbidden to oneself for one’s good.

Importance of Ihram

When millions of Muslims leave for the pilgrimage to the Kaaba in Mecca, they must enter a special state of purity and sanctity, known as Ihram. All pilgrims are equal in the eyes of Allah whether they are Arabs or non-Arabs. Dressing alike is a symbol of justice between races, castes, or between rich and poor.

Ihram also has significance in the white cloak worn by pilgrims, similar to the shroud used to wrap the deceased before burial. Therefore, everyone dressed in the white sheets of Ihram is reminded of how death comes unannounced and does not discriminate between anyone. It encourages believers to improve themselves and avoid sins and bad deeds. The purpose of Ihram is to remind Muslims of their virtues and to help improve and increase their faith.

Dos and don’ts for women in Ihram

In general, women follow the basic dress code preferred by Islamic culture, which includes:

  • Women should wear light-coloured clothes that keep them comfortable.
  • Women’s Ihram should be thick and simple, so no part of the body is exposed during prayer.
  • If women wear a white abaya (a full-length outer garment worn by some Muslim women), the undergarments should also be white because coloured undergarments may shine through.
  • Women can also wear black clothes. There is no compulsion for them to wear white, however many people prefer to wear it. It shows everyone as equal before Allah. Also, white helps keep the body cool when one is praying in the scorching sun.
  • Hijab is the best recommendation for women because it is enough to cover their entire body.
  • After the completion of Umrah, there is a ritual called Taqsir in which women cut an inch of their hair.
